iSociety - A project to become the Salt and Light of the world. It is to raise awareness of some of the social problems faced and to improve the lives of other people involved. There're 2 sections to this, the Long-term Project and the One-off Project. The 5 shortlisted projects are all long-termed. At Camp UNItE, we participated in a project called the Red Paperclip Challenge. It was inspired by a blogger who started off with a small paperclip and through some exchanges, got himself a house in the end. There're also other iSociety projects by various youth camps, like GREEN DAYI HUG MY MUM/DAD and SMILE. Make a difference in the society today!
The judges were Elim Chew(Founder of 77th Street), Kenny Low(Founder of O School), Justin Lee, Darryl Loh, Knik Pang and Leona Leong. Everyone wore so formally, it was almost like a meeting.

The judging criteria for iSociety.
Sorry but you have to tilt your heads to read it!

1. Change Up
"Be the engine of change." This project focuses on environment, healthcare and education. The duo targeted area like Toa Payoh to help the elderly remove items that will attract bed bugs and other harmful insects. These disgusting creatures have been putting danger into their lives for quite some time, it's time to make a change!

To fund this project, sales of designed T-shirts would be conducted. The T-shirts designs are to raise awareness of the social problem. The profits off the sales would also be used to fund the next project. Quite a smart idea, don't you think? (: Youths that are doing social work will also be made to wear the same shirt to raise awareness. There would be 30 limited edition T-shirts for each design. However, they were challenged with the the costs and profits of the T-shirts. While they plan to produce their shirts in China, the shipping fee would be quite costly too.

2. F.E.E.T - Friends Encouraging Elderly Together
As the number of elderly in Singapore has been increasing rapidly, we have to take extra good care of them. Their driving passion is for us not to forget our grandparents. They came up with suggestions like doing Qigong with the elderly every weekend and at the same time, to earn profits from the youths that join them for the session. For the cost, they wanted to get sponsorships before proceeding to fund raising. They tried out their project by promoting their movement on Facebook and Twitter, and also organising Qigong sessions with the elderly. This has blessed the elderly greatly and a lot of them were so thankful to them! (: By promoting their movement online, this would get the attention of many young people to start caring for their grandparents. But in order to sustain it, they need a reputation, according to Elim Chew. Will you support them? (:

3. Lights Out
You've guessed in correctly, it's an anti-smoking campaign. Obviously, it is to help smokers quit smoking. But it is not like any other campaigns, it aims to stop people from even thinking about smoking. The project is targeted at Secondary school students like me as we are the ones who gets influenced quickly. The project is divided into 2 categories - Prevention and Cessation. For Prevention, they decided to organise a flashmob and various fun and engaging activities to keep others occupied. Personally, I'm part of a flashmob organised this year by Tobacco-Free Singapore. It was really a great experience, doing what I like to do for a great cause. (: Some people smoke just because they are bored or rejected. For Cessation, LIFE workshops would be held. Sounds cool eh! (: I think this project will definitely save many youths from the temptation to smoke! "Take your life back."

4. Joytingle
Now, this is interesting. Children are usually afraid of injections and it is very sad to see them blaming themselves for their illness, thinking that it is a form of punishment for the wrong things they did. The little ones need to understand why they are going through this treatment, and what is happening to their body. The vision is to help kids conquer illnesses. Rabbit Ray is here to solve the problem! Being a medical toy designed by Esther Wang, it allows healthcare information to be accessible to children. "Think of it as an adventure, where every single child is like an agent, to conquer the illness." She's such an innovative person, especially when she's from JOL zone! hahaha! :D Her product was shortlisted for the JAMES DYSON AWARD 2011. It is also featured in CITYNEWS! Awesome work, Esther!

By the way, this is Jia Mei interviewing Esther.

5. From Green to Give
This project is pretty special, and an eye-opener for me. Whenever you throw away an electronic device, have you ever wondered where it goes to? Some of the poor villagers in China sell parts of e-waste to make ends meet. E-waste contains harmful toxic components, so can you imagine their state of health right now? Their aim is to raise awareness towards the dangers of e-waste. They talked about e-waste recycling and stopping e-waste from being sent there. However, they were challenged when one of the judges asked about how they would get their income if they is no e-waste. A good cause might lead to a negative problem. Nonetheless, it is a great idea!

After many considerations from the judges, here are the top 3 finalists for iSociety!

1. de G (AN Zone)
2. F.E.E.T. (MJ Zone)
3. Rabbit Ray and Friends (JOL Zone)

Congratulations to all! Look out for their presentations during the Emerge weekend. All the best, I hope that your projects will inspire others and make a great impact to the society! (:

Attended the presentation with JIAMEI. (:
